Digital zoom is a feature in digital cameras that allows image magnification through software processing. Unlike optical zoom, which uses physical lenses to bring the scene closer, digital zoom works by cropping the central part of the sensor and scaling the resulting pixels to fill the frame.

Functioning and Principles

The basic mechanism consists of:

• Cropping: A central region of the original image captured by the sensor is selected.
• Upscaling: The pixels in that region are interpolated to increase their size to match the desired output resolution.

This process does not add new optical information; therefore, image quality usually degrades compared to optical zoom, manifesting as a loss of sharpness or increased digital noise.

Applications and Scope

Digital zoom is primarily used to:

• Extend the effective range of the camera beyond its maximum optical capability.
• Allow tighter framing in situations where it is not possible to physically get closer to the subject.
