PWM dimming (Pulse Width Modulation) is a brightness-control method employed in electronic displays. Rather than varying the voltage applied to the panel continuously, the system toggles the emitter between on and off states at a defined frequency, modulating the relative duration of each state so that the perceived luminance corresponds to an intermediate level.
Operating principle
The control circuit generates a rectangular signal whose duty cycle determines the fraction of time the pixel or backlight remains active. A 50 % duty cycle yields a perceived luminance of roughly half the maximum. The switching frequency is measured in hertz (Hz) and must exceed the temporal-fusion threshold of human vision to avoid visible flicker.
Architecture and panel context
In OLED and LTPO OLED panels each sub-pixel emits light autonomously; PWM dimming modulates the drive current of each sub-pixel. In backlit panels (LCD) the modulation acts on the rear light source. Scope and limitations
The PWM frequency is not a universal value: it varies by manufacturer, model, and in some cases by the selected brightness level. At lower frequencies (below roughly 200 Hz) some sensitive users may perceive slight flicker, particularly in dark environments. Higher frequencies reduce visual fatigue but increase power consumption and control-circuit complexity. Interpreting its presence in a product

This is not, in itself, an indicator of superior or inferior quality but rather the technique chosen by the manufacturer. In summary, PWM dimming is an engineering parameter for brightness control; its mention in a spec sheet informs about the modulation method, not about resolution, colour, or refresh rate, which are independent specifications.
