EU Energy Efficiency Class (Energy Label): what it is, how it works and what it does
A standardized European Union labeling system that assigns a letter (A to G) to products to indicate their relative energy consumption level, enabling comparison among equivalent models.
The energy efficiency class is a standardized labeling system established by the European Union that assigns a specific product an efficiency level expressed as an alphabetic letter. Its purpose is to provide consumers with clear, comparable information about a product's energy consumption relative to other products in the same category.
Principles and operation
The label is based on a letter scale ranging from A (highest efficiency, lowest consumption) to G (lowest efficiency, highest consumption). Each letter corresponds to a defined energy-consumption range set by the applicable regulation for the product category in question. Assignment is made through standardized tests measuring consumption under controlled conditions.
The presence of the classification on a product (for example, as the value EnergyEfficiencyClass: A in a product listing) indicates that the manufacturer or distributor has declared the efficiency level in accordance with the current scale.
Label architecture
- Alphabetic scale: letters A through G, each associated with a consumption interval.
- Associated colour: each class is represented by a colour ranging from green (A) to red (G), reinforcing visual reading.
- Position indicator: an arrow or marker points to the product's specific class within the scale.
Applications
The classification applies to a wide range of household and industrial products, including appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers), lighting equipment, climate-control systems, and, in later extensions, other devices with significant energy consumption. Its use is mandatory for the marketing of covered products within the European market.
Scope and limitations
- Limited comparability: the letter allows comparison of products within the same category but does not establish a universal absolute consumption figure.
- Periodic reclassification: as technology improves, the EU has adjusted the scale on several occasions (for example, removing A+, A++, and A+++ to re-anchor the scale at A), which can cause confusion between labels from different periods.
- Category dependence: a product rated A in one category is not directly comparable to an A-rated product in another category.
Interpretation on a product
When a product displays an energy efficiency class (for example, class A), the consumer should understand that:
- The product has been assessed in accordance with the standard applicable to its category.
- The letter indicates its relative position within the current scale for that category.
- Complementary information (consumption in kWh, capacity, etc.) must be read together with the letter for a complete assessment.
The label is an information tool, not a guarantee of performance under all real-world usage conditions.
The classification is part of the European regulatory framework for ecodesign and energy labelling, and its correct application is supervised by the market-surveillance authorities of each Member State.
