This standard quantifies the degree of protection a device offers against the intrusion of solid particles and liquids. The digit '6' indicates maximum protection against dust, while the digit '7' specifies resistance to immersion in water under controlled conditions.
Principles and Technical Specifications
Dust Protection
The first digit, 6, denotes that the device is completely dust-tight. This means there is no intrusion of solid particles and the equipment is protected against dust accumulation that could interfere with its operation.
Water Resistance
The second digit, 7, defines the device's ability to withstand temporary immersion. According to technical evidence, a device with this classification can resist immersion in water up to a depth of 1 meter for a maximum period of 30 minutes. This specification implies that the device is not designed for indefinite submersion but rather to support brief immersion incidents.
Applications and Interpretation in Products
The presence of the IP67 certification on a product indicates that the manufacturer has validated its resistance to hostile environments. This classification is commonly found in consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and wearables, that require durability against splashes, heavy rain, or accidental drops into shallow bodies of water.
Limitations
- Limited depth and time: Protection is strictly limited to 1 meter of depth and 30 minutes of exposure. Exceeding these parameters may compromise the integrity of the sealing.
- Test conditions: Resistance is validated in fresh water at room temperature. It does not guarantee protection against pressurized liquids, salt water, steam, or chemical liquids.
