OLED/AMOLED Display: what it is, how it works and what it does
Display technology based on organic light-emitting diodes that produce their own light, characterized by pure blacks and high contrast.
Definition and Principles
The term OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) and its variant AMOLED (Active-Matrix) refer to display technology where each pixel generates its own light using organic materials. Unlike LCD screens, which require constant backlighting, OLED/AMOLED panels do not need this rear light source.
Architecture and Function
The architecture of these displays is based on layers of organic materials that emit photons when an electric current is applied. The AMOLED variant incorporates a matrix of thin-film transistors (TFT) for each pixel, allowing for individual and more efficient control of illumination. This facilitates the complete turning off of pixels to display the color black, resulting in theoretically infinite contrast and more vibrant colors.
Applications and Scope
- Mobile devices: It is the predominant standard in high-end and mid-to-high-range smartphones due to its thinness and visual quality.
- Televisions and monitors: Used in large-format screens for cinema and gaming due to their ability to display absolute blacks.
- Wearables: Their low energy consumption when displaying dark images makes them ideal for smartwatches.
Limitations
Despite their advantages, this technology presents challenges such as burn-in (image retention) from prolonged use of static elements and, in some cases, lower maximum brightness compared to the latest generation LCD technologies or MicroLED.
Interpretation in Products
The presence of the OLED/AMOLED specification in a product indicates that the device uses this self-emissive technology. Generally, this is associated with a better visual experience in terms of contrast and viewing angles, although it may imply a higher manufacturing cost compared to conventional LCD screens.
Note: The distinction between OLED and AMOLED is technical; in the consumer market, both terms are often used interchangeably to refer to active-matrix screens.
