IP64 Protection Rating: what it is, how it works and what it does

IP64 is an Ingress Protection classification that certifies a device's resistance to the intrusion of solid particles and water. It is expressed as two digits: the first indicates the level of protection against dust, and the second, against water.

Principles and code structure

The IP64 code breaks down as follows:

• First digit (6): indicates the device is dust-tight. It does not allow the penetration of solid particles, even under prolonged exposure.
• Second digit (4): indicates the device is resistant to water splashes. It withstands water projected from any direction, but is not designed for immersion or high-pressure jets.

Applications

The IP64 certification is commonly found in:

• Consumer electronics (phones, earbuds, wearables).
• Portable equipment and work tools.
• Products marketed with the label splash-resistant or water and dust resistant.

In technical specifications, the IP64 rating is often listed alongside other durability certifications such as MIL-STD-810H, which assesses mechanical resilience against impacts, vibrations, and environmental conditions.

Scope

The IP64 classification covers only protection against the intrusion of dust and water splashes. It does not certify resistance to immersion, hydrostatic pressure, or exposure to aggressive liquids.

Limitations

It is important to note that the presence of the IP64 mark does not guarantee the overall ruggedness of the product or its use in extreme conditions. The certification is limited to the specified solid and liquid ingress tests. An IP64-rated device may still be vulnerable to drops, extreme temperatures, or mechanical stresses beyond the standard's parameters.

Interpretation in a product

When a manufacturer lists IP64 in the specifications, the consumer should understand that:

1. The device does not admit dust ingress under normal use conditions.
2. The device withstands water splashes (e.g., light rain or accidental splashes) but must not be submerged.
3. The certification does not imply immunity to mechanical or environmental damage beyond ingress.

In marketing contexts, the mention of IP64 is frequently accompanied by the phrase splash-resistant, reinforcing the limited scope of water protection.
