IP65 is a specific classification within the Ingress Protection (IP) code system, regulated by the international standard IEC 60529. This standard defines the degree of protection provided by an electrical or electronic enclosure against the intrusion of solid bodies and liquids.

Architecture and Principles

The IP code consists of two numerical digits indicating specific protection levels:

  • First digit (6): Indicates protection against solid intrusion. The value 6 means the equipment is dust tight. No dust ingress is permitted in quantities that would interfere with the operation of the equipment.
  • Second digit (5): Indicates protection against liquid intrusion. The value 5 means the equipment is protected against water jets. The equipment must withstand low-pressure water jets from any direction without harmful effects.

Applications and Context

The IP65 certification is common in devices operating in environments with moderate to high exposure to dust and moisture, but not submersion. It is frequently found in:

  • Water-resistant consumer electronics (such as certain mobile phones or headphones).
  • Industrial equipment and outdoor lighting.
  • Medical or laboratory devices requiring frequent cleaning.

Limitations and Interpretation

It is crucial to correctly interpret the scope of this certification:

  • Not waterproof: IP65 does not guarantee resistance to submersion in water. For that, higher classifications in the second digit (such as IP67 or IP68) are required.
  • Pressure and duration: Protection against water jets (level 5) does not specify the exact duration of exposure or maximum pressure, although it follows standardized test parameters.
  • Comparison: It is often mentioned alongside IP68, which offers superior water protection (submersion), but IP65 remains a robust standard for dust protection and intense splashes.
Note: The presence of the IP65 label on a product indicates it has passed standardized sealing tests against dust and water jets, but it should not be confused with resistance to prolonged submersion.
