IP68 / IP69 Protection: what it is, how it works and what it does

Definition

The designation IP68 or IP69 (also written IP68/IP69) identifies the level of protection of a device against the ingress of solids and liquids, according to the IP (Ingress Protection) coding system established by the international standard IEC 60529. The first digit indicates the level of dust protection and the second, the level of water protection.

In the case of IP68 and IP69, the first digit 6 means complete protection against dust ingress: the enclosure is fully sealed and does not allow solid particles to enter. The second digit distinguishes between two levels of water protection:

  • 8: protection against continuous submersion in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer (depth and duration defined in the product's technical datasheet).
  • 9: protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets applied from multiple angles.

Principles and operation

Protection is achieved through a combination of mechanical sealing (gaskets, membranes, coatings) and enclosure design that prevents the passage of particles and fluids. It is not a single component but a set of engineering decisions that ensure the integrity of the assembly.

IP68/IP69 certification implies that the product has passed standardised tests for dust and water exposure. When a manufacturer declares this classification, the device must meet the criteria of IEC 60529 for each digit.

Relation to military standards

In commercial practice, the mention of IP68/IP69 is often accompanied by a reference to MIL-STD-810H, the U.S. military standard for environmental testing. This association does not replace the IP certification but indicates that the device has additionally been subjected to mechanical, thermal, and impact resistance tests specific to the military standard. The combination of both certifications is presented as an indicator of reinforced durability for demanding environments.

Scope and limitations

The IP68/IP69 classification describes the resistance of the closed assembly under controlled test conditions. It does not guarantee:

  • Protection against mechanical impacts, drops, or unspecified hydrostatic pressure.
  • Permanent operation underwater; prolonged continuous submersion can degrade seals over time.
  • Resistance to chemicals, vapours, or temperatures outside the test range.

Furthermore, the exact submersion specification for digit 8 (depth and duration) is defined by the manufacturer and must be consulted in the product documentation. There is no single universal value for digit 8.

How to interpret its presence on a product

When encountering the mention IP68 or IP69 in a device's technical sheet or marketing, one can conclude that:

  1. The device is sealed against dust ingress (level 6).
  2. It has passed submersion (8) and/or high-pressure jet (9) tests in accordance with IEC 60529.
  3. If accompanied by MIL-STD-810H, the manufacturer has additionally validated resistance to military environmental conditions.

This information is relevant for assessing the product's suitability in wet or dusty environments, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee of unlimited underwater operation or as a substitute for the manufacturer's usage instructions.
