High Brightness Mode (HBM) is a display feature that raises the panel's peak luminance above its standard operating level, enabling adequate readability in high-ambient-light environments. On devices that incorporate it, HBM luminance can reach values such as 1800 nits.
High Brightness Mode (HBM) is a display feature that allows the panel to operate temporarily above its nominal luminance, increasing emitted light to compensate for intense ambient illumination.
Operating principle
Under normal conditions, a display operates within a luminance range defined by the manufacturer to balance sharpness, power consumption, and temperature. When the user or system activates HBM, the panel controller raises the backlight current (in LCD panels) or the emissive subpixel intensity (in OLED panels) to a ceiling above the usual level. This increase is time-limited to prevent premature degradation of the light-emitting components.
Luminance in HBM
The luminance achievable in HBM mode varies by device and panel technology. As a documented reference, a value of 1800 nits in HBM mode has been recorded for a consumer device [3698]. This value far exceeds the typical continuous operating luminance (generally between 500 and 800 nits in mid-to-high-range displays) and is intended for brief outdoor use or under direct sunlight.

Interpreting HBM in a product
The mention of HBM in a product's specifications indicates that the manufacturer has enabled a luminance range above the standard. When evaluating a device, it is important to distinguish between nominal luminance (continuous operation) and HBM luminance (temporary peak). A value of 1800 nits in HBM, for example, does not imply that the display maintains that level indefinitely, but rather that it can reach it for a limited period to improve readability under adverse lighting conditions.
Scope of the concept
The term HBM applies to displays of various sizes and technologies (LCD, OLED, AMOLED) in consumer, industrial, and professional devices. It should not be confused with High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is a memory architecture for processors and has no relation to display luminance.
The presence of HBM in a technical datasheet indicates that the device prioritises outdoor readability, but it does not replace a high nominal luminance for daily use.
